About

I’m Jorel, a Lead Software Development Engineer at Amazon Web Services based in the Boston area. I work on OpenSearch Serverless, where I built the shard management and autoscaling systems that power the service: the infrastructure that decides how to distribute workloads, scale fleets, and keep costs down for customers.

Before AWS, I spent 16 years at Cimpress / Vistaprint building high-throughput rendering and document services. One of those services handled 83,000 requests per minute. I hold two US patents in image rendering systems.

I’m currently building a cloud cost optimization SaaS, tools to help engineering teams understand and reduce their cloud spend. This comes directly from years of working on autoscaling and fleet management, where I saw firsthand how much money gets wasted on over-provisioned and poorly managed infrastructure.

What I work with

  • Cloud: AWS (ECS, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, Fargate, CloudFront, OpenSearch)
  • Languages: Rust, Java, TypeScript, C#/.NET
  • Domains: Distributed systems, autoscaling, cost optimization, AI/ML productionization
